NURSES

In order to work as a nurse in the UK, you will need to meet the requirements and register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) here in the UK. Eligibility requirements are:

  1. To have completed nursing qualification that would have led to your registration as Registered Nurse in the country of training
  2. To hold registration as Registered Nurse (not mandatory)
  3. To meet the minimum English language requirement by taking one of the NMC accepted tests:
    • IELTS Academic / UKVI IELTS Academic with minimum score of 6.5 in writing and 7.0 in listening, reading and speaking OR
    • Occupational English Test (OET) with a minimum score of Grade B in listening, reading, writing and speaking

Below is a brief summary of the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s registration process;

  1. Nurses check if they are ready to register by completing a pre-application checklist tool on the NMC website: https://www.nmc.org.uk/registration/joining-the-register/register-nurse-midwife/trained-outside-the-eueea/new-application/how-to-guide/check-ready/checklist-tool/. A number of questions will need to be answered about nursing qualification, registration, English language etc. Completion of the pre-application checklist tool will help nurses to determine what evidence will need to be provided during the registration process, who may need to be contacted before the start of the registration process and what guidance to read.
  2. Nurses must provide evidence of meeting the NMC English requirement. Job Connections UK then arranges employer’s interview.
  3. Nurses must complete eligibility and qualification application and upload copies of relevant certificates and information as well as pay the NMC evaluation fee of £140 (non-refundable). The outcome of the evaluation will be sent by email within 14 days of NMC receiving all relevant information and documents.
  4. Once the eligibility criteria has been satisfied, NMC will invite you to take the Test of Competency (Computer Based Test CBT and Observed Structured Clinical Examination OSCE) and to complete the registration application form online which includes entering required information and uploading documents.
  5. The NMC's Computer Based Test (CBT) is a multiple-choice exam based on knowledge, skills and attitude in a specific field of nursing. This test can be written in home countries. We offer an online revision package to nurses who sign our training agreement.
  6. Visa application stage begins once CBT has been passed. Job Connections UK is responsible for; preparing and submitting online visa applications, handling all the necessary payments and securing a visa lodging date.
  7. Nurse travels to the UK and starts work as a Pre-registered nurse (paid work).
  8. OSCE must be taken within 3 months of arrival in the UK. Employers have mentors and training in place to prepare nurses for OSCE.
  9. After passing the OSCE, submitting your documents to the NMC for assessment and submitting the NMC online application, payment for the NMC registration fee of £153 must be made.
  10. NMC evaluates application and verifies information provided. The NMC aims to assess the application within 35 days of receiving all supporting information and no later than 3 months of receiving of completed application.
  11. Decision on the application – if successful a PIN number is issued to the nurse. The nurse can now work as UK Registered Nurse or Registered Mental Health Nurse.
